Tips for finding and living in your first student flat

Writer's picture: Chelsea WalshChelsea Walsh

Finding a flat can be stressful so hopefully this helps!

1. Make sure you have a checklist of things you want before viewings. If you know what you want that you will find it easier to find it. But you have to be either willing to compromise or make sure you are willing to pay more for location or a living room. Living in the west end it can be super expensive when your looking for a living room and you need to be willing to pay that.

2. Pests! Old buildings especially in Glasgow are likely to have mice if not rats. My last flat had mice so if its a old building i recommend asking whether they have had any previous issues and as soon as you move in add some traps and prevention techniques.

3. Know your rights. One thing I initially didn't think of but its important to check to lease beforehand.

4. Checking for damp! Damp is such an issue and if your new flat has damp make sure its sorted as soon as possible.

5. Make an inventory. Whether your required to or not take a picture of any damages to the flat that were there when you moved in.

6. Setting up Wifi and utilities. Don't be tempted by deals you get when signing up like vouchers, just go with the cheapest you can find. Also know how long your contract is as there are plenty of student contracts more suited to the length of time you'll be in the flat.

7. Don't be a shit flatmate. You have to live with these people for a year so better that they like you. Share chores and you'll more likely get on. But also don't be a push over its not one persons job to tidy the flat.

8. Be nice to neighbours. Be careful about noise and be nice when you move in they can make your time there not fun so better to be respectful.

Have fun! Anymore tips people have feel free to message or leave the comments down below. Chelsea xox
