University Q&A

Leave any questions you have in the comments or message me on insta at @chelseamewalsh.

1. Do I work part-time during my studies?

Yes I do I work at a bar in the city centre of Glasgow and throughout university so far I have always had a job. I worked as a PR and also in retail last year. I try to limit the hours I am doing when exams are on so it is important I get a flexible job and the current job I have is very flexible. A good way to make money also is brand ambassador jobs and last year I worked with WKD.

2. What are the living costs?

Depends food is generally £20-£30 a week at the most, with rent and bills being £500+ depending on where you live. Then you also have the night life and the money spent here can really vary but can reduced in a range of budgeting ways. Halls generally the rent is slightly more expensive than living in your own flat but it was still the best part of university or me so it is worth it.

3. What are student halls like?

I lived in QMR in Glasgow but also spent time at the student halls across Glasgow University. The private halls are considerably nicer but also considerably more expensive. Murano definitely has a reputation but isn’t as bad as it as perceived and generally everyone has so much fun. If you’re thinking about going QMR check out my room tour on YouTube I can do a more detailed post on halls and get some points of views of other students.

4. Will I get homework like in school?

Not really not like school but you will get work because if you don’t hand it in no one chases you and it’s on you. For maths you get weekly problem sheets and then for other subjects you can get regular tutorial work. There are also projects and essays to hand in that count towards your grade.

5. What happens during Freshers Week?

It’s really a chance to meet people and party without the burden of lectures, make the most of it. The unions have something on every night but other clubs also are open more. Check out your unis page for more info.

6. How many hours of class should I expect?

I have 14 hours a week in second year but depends on your course.
